Overview
This tour will take you far into the interior of Lesotho, up to one of the highest dams in Southern Africa. Under the luring skies, the loch-like arms of Katse Dam, the green mountainsides are like a wilder version of Scotland. The lives of nowadays Lesotho highlands villagers probably aren’t very different from the lives of Scottish highlands villagers 200 years ago either.
We depart very early from Mont Plaisir, cross the border and drive to Butha-Buthe, then Leribe (Hlotse) where we turn South-East into the mountains. From Leribe it is only 122 km to Katse, but it will take several hours to drive it. The road is excellent, but it is very steep and winding. The road passes the lowland village of Pitseng and climbs in the Maloti Mountains over the Mafika Lisiu Pass (3090 mtr) to drop to Ha Lejone.
It continues past Mamohau mission, crosses the impressive Malibamat’so Bridge, climbs over another series of mountains to the Matsoku Valley, re-crosses the Malibamat’so River and ends in Katse.
In Katse we can do a tour into the dam wall, and visit the botanical gardens. Lunch will be at Katse or somewhere along the road depending on progress. In the late afternoon we return.
Due to the slow progress in the mountains this tour will start at 05.45hrs. This tour can also be done as an overnight tour with sleeping in tents or in a cottage at Katse.
